Communication is Key!

Rheem Elementary is a very special place that takes advantage of a “team” approach—teachers, students, and parents all joining together to promote a dynamic learning environment in which all students can thrive.  

Make sure you are receiving all important communications from Rheem School.   Here are the Big Three:

Rheemarks: – This weekly email (look for it on Sundays) is sent through Rheem's School Messenger System from Principal Sullivan.  Family email addresses are pulled from our data base (the info provided at registration) to make sure that ALL families receive this newsletter.  This newsletter focuses on current school events and issues.  

PTA E-News – Rheem’s weekly PTA Newsletter is sent out on Wednesdays and limited to important information and updates about PTA programs, activities, opportunities, and more!  Once you sign up for PTA, you’ll start receiving these informative newsletters.

REMIND text messages -- It’s easy!  It’s quick!  It’s informative!  Last year, we began using a new system called REMIND to send quick “texts” to parents who sign-up for this service.  The one-way text messages come directly from the front office and are limited to brief, timely “Rheeminders.”  This is the best way to not miss an important due date or forget a minimum day!  To receive messages via text, simply text @rheem to 81010 or click HERE to download instructions.

In addition, all classroom teachers have email distribution lists to inform parents of specific classroom events.  Being aware of programs, schedules, due dates, etc. is key to a successful (and less stressed!) school year for you and your child.

Dear Rheem Team Families,

I hope everyone was able to get outside and enjoy some of this weekend’s weather with their children. They definitely were in need of some outdoor activity. And for those who have been waiting by their computer all weekend for the weekly newsletter, here you go.

This Week at Rheem:

Monday, October 16th:

  • Mr. Greer’s 5th grade class on an overnight fieldtrip

Tuesday, October 17th:

  • Mrs. Gubser's 5th grade class on an overnight fieldtrip
  • School Site Council meeting from 3:15-4:30

Wednesday, October 18th:

  • Regular Wednesday (8:25-1:50 for everyone)

Thursday, October 19th:

  • Regularly scheduled day

Friday, October 20th:

  • All of Kindergarten on a fieldtrip to the Bay Area’s Children’s Theatre in Berkeley to see the “Hungary Caterpillar.”

Monday, October 23rd:

  • Mrs. Cavallero's 5th grade class on an overnight fieldtrip

School News and Highlights:

Rheem’s 43rd Annual Butterfly Parade was a huge success this past Friday as families and friends came together to witness the “Flight of the Monarch.” Kudos to all the kindergartners for their amazing performance, and thank you Mrs. Lorie, Ms. Kathan and Ms. Inzeo for all that you do to make Rheem a magical Butterfly Garden.

5th grade Fieldtrip on the Eureka: The excitement is just hours/days away for all of our 5th graders as they prepare for a life at sea. (or at least 24 hours) Each of them gets to take part in this great experience of what life is like as a sailor. Thank you Mr. Greer, Mrs. Cavallero and Mrs. Gubser for taking our children on the high seas and back.

Make Up Date set for Fall Carnival and Cake Walk

Thursday, November 2nd from 4:30-7:00 will be the make-up date for the Fall Carnival and Cake Walk. Thank you to A.J. Brown all PTA members who have worked so hard to put together the Fall Carnival, and gracefully handle last week’s postponement. We all realize that a Thursday night may not be the ideal evening for a Carnival but seeing the event is an early evening get together with food and games available what better way to spend a Thursday than with family and friends in support of Rheem. For all families who have already purchased raffle tickets please remember you do not have to be present to WIN!! More information will be coming out in this week’s PTA eNews and if you have additional questions please reach out to A.J. Readers’ Workshop Presentation

Parents are invited to learn more about their child’s reading program and curriculum at this Thursday’s (10/19) Parent Education Presentation – “Helping Readers Soar Through a Reading Workshop Approach” from 6:30 – 8:00 at the JM library. The presentation is by the very talented Leslie Nash, who has traveled the country training teachers and specialists alike in the reader's and writer's workshop model has this message,

"I am looking forward to another great parent night this year! It is my hope that those who didn't attend last year will come this year and learn about the important work their reader is doing in class and ways to support them at home. It really makes such a difference when parents understand the methodology behind the learning and therefore we will focus on those fundamentals during our parent night again this year."

Rheem Site Council Looking for One more parent

Parent Member Needed to Complete 2017-2018 Committee

The purpose of Rheem School’s Site Council (SSC) is to develop, support, and monitor our school goals. In recent years, the council’s work has focused on supporting the district’s Strategic Plan by developing and monitoring actions steps to implement the Common Core standards and the Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop program. Last year, specific goals were established in Mathematics and Language Arts based on CAASPP data. Traditionally, our council also develops a “School Climate” goal to promote and maintain a positive learning environment for all students.

According to Site Council by-laws, the council must consist of equal representation from the faculty and the parent community. Currently, there is one open position for parent representation on the council. The SSC meets approximately six times throughout the school year, after school on Tuesdays. Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 17th, beginning at 3:15 in Room 19. If interested in this worthwhile volunteer opportunity, please contact Principal Brian Sullivan (376-4441) for more information, or simply come to the meeting to find out what it’s all about! 

News from Roadrunner Club

Hello from Roadrunner Club!!!

Just a gentle reminder: if your child is taking a 3:00pm after school class, they are not at Roadrunner Club to receive a 3:00pm snack. Please pack an extra snack for them for that purpose.

If you are changing your Permanent Reservation, please remember to write the complete new schedule on the form, not just the change that you want changed.

You need to call Roadrunner Club if you need a drop-in reservation.  If you call the office without calling Roadrunner Club it is not a reservation and it is a $25 no reservation fee. (there have been many days that we have been full)

A Drop-In Reservation should be made by 9:00am the morning of. The reason for this is because we do not pick-up our e-mails and phone log until the afternoon person arrives, which is usually around 1:00pm.  We don't want to be put in a position to have to call you after 1:00pm and say there is no room for a drop-in reservation.   Please call by 9:00am.

The Last Word:

This past week saw Rheem students spend their days inside due to the air quality caused by the devastating fires in the North Bay. With so many people feeling the effects of these terrible events, Rheem’s student council is starting their coin drive this week to help those affected by recent disasters. Student council members had an opportunity to talk with each class last week about what their efforts are meant to support and students throughout Rheem have started planning on how they can help. Kudos to their efforts and a heads-up to all of you in case your child begins to rummage through your car or purse for loose change.

In the words of Aesop, "No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted." Go get 'em Rheem Team!!
